Quick, easy, furry monster cake tutorial and recipe, homemade with simple ingredients and decorated in orange frosting. Great for Halloween parties or serve as a fun kids monster birthday cake.

Halloween will be here in just a few weeks and today's cake would make a great addition to any Kids Halloween Party. It can also be added to my growing collection of monster-themed desserts such as Easy Monster Cupcakes and Candy Corn Monster Cookies and these Monster Donuts

The great thing about today's tutorial is that you can get very creative with it. Use different colored icings, different candies and even change the expressions to make scary monster cakes.

Easy Monster Cake

How to make monster cake?

  1. Bake cakes– Allow them to cool down fully.
  2. Ice and stack cakes– Place one cake on a cake stand, fill it with icing, place the other cake on top and ice the entire cake.
  3. Pipe fur or hair– Use a star tip to pipe fur all over the cake.
  4. Add eyes– Use round chocolates for this or even fondant.
  5. Pipe mouth– Use black icing to make a crooked smile.
  6. Enjoy! Serve immediately or chill in the fridge until you are ready to dig in.

Tips and Techniques

  • Consistency of icing is important– If it's too thin, it won't hold its "fur" shape and become messy. If it's too firm, it would be too hard to squeeze out of the piping bag and not stick to the cake. It should be a medium consistency- Not too thick and not too thin!
  • Cake must be cool before icing- You cannot ice or pipe a hot or even warm cake. It needs to cool down completely or else the buttercream will melt.
  • Practice piping– If you have never piped before or you are a little rusty, just practice piping on a sheet of wax paper before piping on the cake.
  • Use gel colors– Liquid food coloring has a tendency to make icing thinner. Gel coloring is more concentrated and doesn't affect the icing consistency.
  • Make mini cakes– Instead of a large cake, you can make multiple individual-sized smaller cakes or even cupcakes with the same tutorial.
  • Use a different tip for piping fur- I used a star tip but you can use the grass tip or French star tip or even the round tip to make different styles of fur/ hair.
  • Add other features– Like teeth, tongue, nose or horns, using different shapes of candies or Marshmallow Fondant.
  • What frosting to use? I used classic buttercream icing but you can also use Marshmallow Frosting or this Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting.
  • What type of cake to use? I used vanilla cake that was tinted orange but you can use any cake flavor of your choice. Try this Chocolate Cake or this Moist Red Velvet Cake.
